With Opal, Nugget Ice At Home Is Possible

opal-icemaker-product-photos-10

Not all ice is created equal, and a lot of people are fans of nuggets. What’s that? It’s the kind of irregularly shaped ice pellets offered by some restaurant chains like Sonic. This ice is softer, easy to chew, and the increased surface area means your drinks will get cooled down faster and will absorb some of the flavour they’re immersed in. The Opal machine pictured above is able to make this kind of ice by the bucketloads, making it possible for you to have BBQs with fancy nugget ice any time you want. At full steam, Opal is able to make up to 24lbs of ice a day, in 3 lbs. batches. So how is this ice made?

Opal nugget ice is made by scraping the ice flakes off the inside of a chilled aluminum cylinder. The flakes are extruded through a round hole, compacting them into frozen nuggets of air and ice. Nugget ice is about 50% air by volume, and those tiny pinholes of air between the ice flakes are the secret to soft, chewable, flavorful ice.

Sounds pretty cool. Opal is back by GE Appliances, which means you’ll get a quality product for a fraction of the cost of regular nugget ice machines: the appliance is a $399 pledge on IndieGogo, with the campaign being almost 1,000% funded as of this writing. Clearly people have a hankering for this, so get yours before the price goes up to $499.

People Have Too Much Money: Japanese Tour Bus Seats 10, Costs $1,200+ Per Passenger

Japanese-bus-tours-1

Would you pay $1,200 for a bus tour? Some people in Japan are. As a matter of fact, $1,200 is the cheapest ticket for a special bus tour by Japanese company Isetan Mitsukoshi Travel; the bus only seats 10 people, and carries passengers in luxury similar to that offered in first class flights. More expensive options range up to $2,665. Sure, you get tons of leg room, drinks and meals, toured outings, and even stay at some fancy hotels… but you’re still paying $1,200+ for travel in a road going vehicle. Trips leave Tokyo and take passengers to cities like Nagano and Gunma, though destinations vary by season. By the looks of it the company is doing well, which just goes to show that this world is full of people with too much money.

Trouble Waking Up? This Bed Will Toss You Out!

bed-ejector

There’s two types of people in this world: those who wake up when their alarm rings, and those who snooze themselves into oblivion. If you’re tired of letting your life pass you by because you can’t get yourself out of bed, you might want to consider Colin Furze’s approach: he built the Ejector Bed! When the time comes, it’ll activate two flashing lights, two fire alarms, a firework, two semi truck horns… and then launch you out of bed with a hydraulic lift. The pressure is adjustable, so you can either be gently tilted out, or violently expelled. Either way, you won’t be able to keep on snoozing and your day will lay before you, ready for consumption.

Of course, the Ejector Bed is not something you can buy. But if Colin was able to build it, an enterprising reader could do the same.
