2001 Monolithic VHS Cassette Tape (Images courtesy David Herbert)
By Andrew Liszewski

Here’s one for the sci-fi and Kubrick fans out there. David Herbert is an artist who recreates iconic scenes and images from films, books, music, art and nature with ‘impoverished’ materials and a rough style of sculpting. But I have to admit his recreation of the monoliths from 2001 as a large, VHS copy of 2001: A Space Odyssey looks anything but impoverished.

And now that the monoliths have taught man how to use tools, I wonder if this version can teach man how to set the clocks on their VCRs.
