A while back, ecoIron calculated that if Google were to use a black background instead of a white background on its search page, over the course of one year 3000 megawatt-hours of electricity would be saved (assuming that 25% of people are still stuck with CRTs). And that’s the idea behind Blackle. Blackle is a fully functional Google clone, except it’s gray text on a black background. When your monitor displays a predominantly white webpage, it uses about 15 more watts than it does while displaying a predominantly black webpage. Google’s 200 million (ish) queries a day over one year adds up to something like $75,000 worth of energy spent on that white background. Not only does it save energy every time you use Blackle as opposed to Google, but it’s a good reminder that lots of people taking easy little steps to save energy can make a big difference. And, you know, it goes with my nail polish and eye liner.

You might want to note that Blackle is just the first page of http://www.searchincolor.com, a site which has offered google search in color since a much longer time. There are other color combinations on searchincolor which are energy saving..in general a dark background with light text will save energy over a standard white background.

http://www.blackgoogle.co.uk does something very similar (and looks much nicer).
I find the other version http://www.Darkoogle.com is more easier to read since they uses green text just like the old days. Green text are more easy for our eyes and reduce eye strain.
Some people may find it uncomfortable reading light text on a black background. They might find Greygle to be a better choice for them. It uses a grey background with dark text which they might find easier to read. This still allows for some energy savings while providing an easier reading experience.

Thanks for that i think the blackle concept is well cool. Recently while surfing i also found blackle games; interesting concept: play games and save the world!! lol
There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is http://www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to http://www.cleanblack.com/theme/
