Conference Call Voice Shifting

Conference CallBy Andrew Liszewski

While setting up a conference call is pretty easy these days, with a room full of people on either end it can sometimes be hard to know who is speaking. Motorola thinks the solution to this problem is to change some of the caller’s voices making each one more distinct.

When the conference call starts everyone involved would say a few words which would then be analysed by software to see if any voices sound alike. If two persons sound enough alike to be easily confused one of them will have their voice shifted in pitch a few semitones until it sounds different enough to be easily distinguished. The pitch shifting itself will use the same technology seen in recording studios that allows someone like Paris Hilton to sing in tune and also means the altered voices won’t end up sounding like Mickey Mouse.
