You made history last night, and today you have your first African American president. Congratulations! You should be proud of yourselves. God knows the rest of the world is, nowhere more than up here in Canada, your frostbitten neighbor.

  1. We Americans like to believe that we elected Obama for a lot more than the color of his skin, but that seems to be all you pretending-not-to-be-racist Canadians and Europeans can talk about. When we want you to meddle in our politics, we'll let you know.

  2. First, no one is meddling in our politics.
Second, that is an extremely hypocritical statement coming from an American. Are you completely ignorant of all the governments and elections the CIA has corrupted?

  3. Don't worry America, not all of us up in Canada are proud of you. Believe it or not some people actually use the word 'change' as a verb, not just an empty campaign slogan.

Enjoy 4 more years of being governed by corporations!

  4. My goodness. I can't believe the comments you've gotten on this friendly little post!

Thank you very much. Most of us Americans are delighted that our country has pulled together to elect the right person for the job, and we're looking forward to effecting positive change in our country and in our international relationships. The fact that Barack Obama is African-American is icing on the cake, and is a sign that we've come a long way in a short time.

Hopefully in four years the naysayers will see that Obama is a great president, and will vote to re-elect him.

  5. I don't know how to break this to you, but the recent economic troubles that have affected the US could just have easily happened if the Democrats were in the Whitehouse. I've got nothing against capitalism and the pursuit of profit, but both parties are basically controlled by corporate America.

Look at Obama's record setting campaign donations this year, for the first time in history the Democrats were better funded than the Republicans! It seems big business has finally learned that both sides are equally up for sale.

So while he seems like a nice guy and all, and has definitely captured the popular vote, let's stop pretending there's going to be any real change in the US in the next 4 years.

  6. Sorry, David Ponce, but this is what happens when you make a political post on a technology blog. You get people totally ignorant on politics, conspiracy theorists, and radical libertarians. 🙁

  7. Sigh, ignorance is bliss. You just keep those blinders on America!

And enjoy that $700 billion bailout… or wait, maybe that's a conspiracy too and isn't really happening, yeah I'm going to believe that instead. Phew, everything's gonna be alllll-right now that Obama's in charge!

  8. So when someone does not share your political ideology, they are “totally ignorant on politics?”
    And what part of
“Or be a true American and vote Libertarian”
    is radical?
However, I do agree with the intent of your post. David Ponce, posting political entries on a non-political blog is bad form. I appreciate the sentiment behind your post. But 100% of the political posts I have seen on non-political blogs have run similar to this one. Best to stick with the blog's theme. That is what unites your readership. Introducing anything else is likely to spotlight our differences.

  9. Well put skeptic.

And David, don't presume you speak on behalf of everyone in Canada, not to mention the rest of the world. There are just as many people outside the US that are disappointed to see either McCain or Obama elected as the next US president, as those that are happy with the election results.

I've always liked that Ohgizmo seems impartial when it comes to gadgets, just presenting the facts and not claiming some piece of technology is more awesome than another. Let's keep it that way when it comes to politics too.

  10. @tintin(1) While radical libertarians and conspiracy theorists love to talk about how everyone else is sheep, THEY are the true 'sheep'. blinders on, lol
@skeptic No, I am fine with people not sharing my political idealogies. I consider people 'totally ignorant on politics' when they are just that. “being a true american” has nothing to do with which party you are in. sorry, however, for saying “radical libertarian”, I guess thats a bit redundant
@tintin(2) not nearly as many, very very few even. the internet has a larger percentage of independents and libertarians because it is NOT representative of the general population and you can't judge it on that. go look at the approval polling for obama in other countries.

  11. Thanks. Unfortunately it kinda of comes in a bittersweet package. California seems to have passed proposition 8, which takes away the rights of gays and lesbians to marry. Similar propositions and amendments passed in other states as well. Hopefully the new president will do something to bridge the gap of inequality in marriage here in the United States.

  12. I tend to agree, I'm already growing tired of hearing self rightous Canadians and Europeans congratulating us as if we give a crap about what they think. We didn't elect Obama to please you douchebags.

  13. The only way to be an African-American (or any other XXXX-American for that matter) is to have dual citizenship (Africa first). He is an AMERICAN OF AFRICAN DESCENT!

  14. @ tintin – WRONG! The Republicans, namely our current Pres is the one who single handedly dorked up the world as it is today. Responsible for this nonsense war, in-turn the price of oil via OPEC's contempt for him, which in-turn screwed the economy of the U.S., and since so many other economies are linked to the U.S. Dollar, they suffer too. Obama is finally going to be able to proceed with realistic views, placing our people first, and bullsh*t like religion last (which have no place in politics AT ALL).

  15. I will always respect the office of President and since Obama is now the PE I'll keep my mouth shut. Liberal America will soon find out the mistake they made. Lets all pray it doesn't come with a major terror attack or worse GTNW.

  16. I suspect the Canadians will be less enthusiastic should Obama roll back NAFTA. Americans are split on this issue, and not necessarily along party lines. Anyway, David…right…please stick to gadgets and cut back on the self-righteousness.

  17. @Merk – Yes, Bush created a problem that originated foorm the Cater administration. Prime example of very simplistic and polarized thinking on your part.

The President is not a dictator or a ruler. For that to happen, the Democrats in government would have to roll over and follow along without question. You do know that they have been in control of the House for some time now, right?

And religion has not place in politics? Did you miss all of the messiah comments about Obama? How about a gaggle of children singing what smacks of a hymn to Obama.

It was creepy in Jesus Camp when children did the same to and for Bush. It is no less creepy when they do it for Obama.

And don’t forget the banning of marriage for anyone in California. Even for the left, religion is a factor.
