I have to admit as a kid fishing never interested me but these days I wouldn’t mind spending a day out on a well equipped fishing boat just to play with all the great toys they have. Humminbird has been making such toys for many years now and their latest fishfinder/navigation device doesn’t disappoint. Besides a huge 8 inch color screen with 800×400 pixel resolution the 997c includes a revolutionary 800kHz side imaging sonar technology that produces amazingly clear images of what’s under the water all around you. And even if fishing isn’t your thing the 997c can also be used to hunt for discarded boots, shipwrecks or even sunken promotional chests full of gold doubloons from Volvo. It’s just too bad there won’t be another one of those Pirates movies next year.
The 997c also has all the latest navigation technologies that today’s fisherman (or treasure hunter) would come to expect like a 16 channel WAAS/EGNOS GPS receiver, a built-in UniMap of the US coastline, inland lakes and rivers and two memory card expansion slots for saving screen shots or loading up additional cartography data.
The 997c is available directly from the Humminbird online store and I guess if you fish for a living the $1,999 price tag isn’t too bad but for the weekend fisherman going out in a canoe it might be a bit overkill.
