2006 Olympic Torch designBy Michelle Cheung

This is one of those “that’s… good to know” odd posts. The Olympic torch design has always been conservative, meaning somone can identify it as a torch at first sight. That has been changing in the last 25 years: The Torch is becoming more moderny.

Here we have the torch designed for the Torino 2006 Winter Olympic. The torch design is fascinating allright, but I found the technical requirements for the torch more exciting.

“It (the flame) cannot be re-lit and it must never go out, not even in rain, snow, or in winds up to 120 km/h. The flame of each torch, which burns for 15 minutes, must not be higher than 10 centimetres.”

Also, look at the pictures of people holding the torch: most of them look like they are ready to beat someone with it.

Check out the Olympic torch collection.
