When you hear of a mouse with more than 5 or 6 buttons, you tend to assume that it will be used for gaming. Of course gamers aren’t the only ones that like to assign macros and functions to their extra mouse buttons. Boring office tasks can also be made quicker with these same tools. That’s why the OpenOffice Mouse was born.
This thing honestly looks like some ugly mouse straight out of the mid-90’s. Function over form, as they say. The mouse features 18 programmable keys and one joystick. Apparently 18 buttons was the maximum number to have and still be able to find the right one by touch. Sure, it’s ugly, but if you like cramming as many functions as possible onto your mouse keys, then this $75 gadget is going to be right up your alley. It even has 512k of on-board memory so you can take your key bindings with you wherever you go.

This mouse is really existing and no hoax, but Openoffice has never give the OK for this mouse. therefor the Manufacturer has deleved the print “OpenOffice.org” at the back of the mouse.
This mouse will come, but not as a OpenOffice mouse.
I can barely handle the two buttons on the mouse I have. *Now, which one was the right click?*
I don't know, I feel that if I'm in OpenOffice, I'm not using my mouse a whole lot. Keyboard shortcuts are much faster. And even then, I can't think of 18 things I'd want to preprogram on my mouse.

I agree, I suppose this is for someone with a lot of macros… I can see myself accidentally pressing a button and having it auto replacing things. Yea not for me. Less is more for me.
I find myself accidentally clicking the right button often enough just when my hand is resting on my mouse. This would be a disaster for me.
this is an interesting concept, but like many others have already said I find that keyboard shortcuts and macros are more useful and helpful.
You mean this is real? It isn't just a joke about open source software?
I've had mice with more that a few buttons before, the biggest problem with them isn't that there is too many buttons, but that the program you want to use the mouse with doesn't recognize that your mouse has that many buttons. When this mouse comes out, I hope that the driver that controls all of those functions and buttons is more compatible and stable than the others I've used. Maybe being open source will help it out and new programs will have native support for high buttoned mice.
Way too much. I find 2 buttons and my scroll wheel plenty. I can barely use the “back” button I have on this MS mouse.

That's the rub that i have with my 7-button Razer. I use the 4th & 5th buttons as ctrl & shift. Unfortunately, there's no way to make the 6th & 7th buttons accessible to software (as anything other than redundant scrollwheel signals) without loading its 'driver' which crashes my system. Interestingly, simple reassignment happens inside the mouse, and persists even after the 'driver' has been removed; so if only i could find some little utility that assigns the buttons to something that AutoHotkey can use, then just exits, i'd be smiling about it.
It would rock if the extra buttons (beyond 5) showed up as game control buttons (which almost seems likely with this monster), as there are lots of things (including AutoHotkey and Ventrilo) that can work with those directly.
Do it that way, make the joystick relocatable to the other side (i usually mouse left-handed), and give it an isometric (TrackPoint-oid) nubbie for scrolling, and this would my dream mouse. (If the latter is what the joystick does, then i'd want it on top.)
