No matter what your opinion is on any of the Star Wars films I’m pretty sure anyone with a healthy interest in gadgets or gizmos wouldn’t mind their own R2D2. Whether you need to zap some 3-foot furry creature or break out of a detention cell an R2 unit will always come in handy.
As a start you might want to throw down a bid on this R2D2 hero dome that was used in both Return Of The Jedi and The Phantom Menace. ‘Hero’ basically means that this particular dome was used for close-up shots which meant that it had to be properly finished and painted with a lot of extra detail that would show up on camera. Versions of the dome used in shots where R2 was in the background would not be as detailed which makes this one even more valuable as a collectors item.
The dome even comes with a letter of authenticity from Kenny Baker (the actor who ‘played’ R2D2) attesting to the fact he used the dome in the previously mentioned films and that he may have also used it in The Empire Strikes Back. He’s just not 100% sure.
Only serious Star Wars collectors need apply though since the eBay auction starts at a whopping $100,000.
