Well here’s a clever way to encourage people to conserve water while they’re washing their hands. As you use the Poor Little Fish Sink, designed by Yan Lu, the water in the fishbowl slowly drains away. So if you use too much the goldfish will meet an untimely demise. According to Yan the “Poor Little Fish basin offers an emotional way to persuade consumers to think about saving water, by making consumption tangible” though I’m sure there are still a lot of people who would value clean hands over the life of a small fish.

Of course thanks to some clever and hidden plumbing in the base of the sink, the water that comes out of the faucet doesn’t actually come from the fish tank, nor will it ever drain out completely. And when shut off the water in the bowl does slowly refill so the fish is never in any real danger, though I suspect it might suffer some emotional distress every time its home drains away.

  1. Did you even read this? The fish is in “no real danger”. Goldfish are such stupid animals that the fish won't even realize it is approaching danger until it actually can't breathe. This stupidity is also why they keep eating themselves to death if you feed them too much. There is nothing inhumane because the fish is not emotionally tortured and its life is not legitimately threatened. You are just an idiot.

  2. I realize there's no danger, but its the terror factor of killing a little fishy.

Besides, haven't you ever had to fix a sink/toilet with a leak before? Water fixtures tend to spring leaks from time to time.

  3. This is a mighty blow against the good hygiene cause. Millions of signs across the world telling employees to wash their hands nullified in an instant by this idiotic invention. I hope who ever made this absolutley loves fecal matter, viruses, and other pathogens in thier food and on every doorknob, hand rail, and surface they come into for the rest of their lives because that is what this device promotes.

  4. actually fish in normal environments can eat and eat, it's only manufactured food fed to fish in fish tanks that will kill them. fish have very short digestive tracts. plus in such a small tank, if you give a fish all it can eat, it will poison the tank with ammonia and die.

  5. I thought I had, and I did. I know the water is not coming out of the fish bowl.

My point is this sink encourages people to save water at the expense of washing and cleaning their hands after using a toilet because the easiest way for them to save water is to not use it at all. There are other ways to save water than cutting down on hygiene, especially as this sink offers no alernatives such as alcohol based waterless gel or wet-napkins.

  7. Um, no it does not? No where in the article does it say we should not wash our hands after using the toilet. This is just one man's [rather silly] attempt to encourage people to use LESS water. This sounds to me like YOUR personal problem with folks who don't wee/wash. Stop worrying about germs and get on with your life 😉

  8. What if I decided not to wash my hands encase the fish dies? Is spreading germs OK? Also what if I decided I just want to kill the fish and realise “hey” the fish water is not draining out then I'm wasting more water surely?

It does look nice- causes debate.

  9. Last time I checked you can de-chlorinate the water. There are magical drops that can do that yano. you could invent some dumbass thing to drop the little drops into the water and magically it neutralizes the chlorine content. What do you think I do for my fish tank? Screw going out and buying fucking distilled water!!

  10. Some people come up with stupid ideas like this. Until I read it, you’d think the water from the fish bowl can’t possibly be clean to wash your hands with. But the water doesn’t come from the bowl. So yeah, it’s trying to get YOU to conserve by the sink using twice as much water? That’s just retarded
