This twist on the standard park bench is apparently an attempt by designer Martin Nicolausson (or Lars Gunnars, depending on who you ask) to encourage strangers to communicate in public spaces. Basically, if you need a place to sit down you’re going to have to find someone else to sit on the other end and cooperate with you, or you’re both out of luck. It also seems like a great way to make the time fly if you’re waiting for something. In fact, if they installed these at every transit stop here I wouldn’t care how late the tram was!
