We imagine that if you’re going to the lengths of buying a smart lock that won’t open unless you’re below the legal drinking limit, you are aware that you have a problem. Well, good on you for doing something about it, although we’re not convinced this particular product is the perfect answer. The AlcohoLock immobilizes your bike and keeps it that way until you’ve completed a breath analysis, clearing you of excessive amounts of booze. If you fail the test, not only will it not open, it’ll also alert a designated family friend and give them the option to remotely unlock it should they see fit. We imagine that when trying to quit, having someone to be accountable to is a good idea. But to have to pay $250 for an aluminum lock, one which needs batteries that require regular charging, well… that just seems like an annoying and unnecessary expense; perhaps avoiding taking your bike out when you know you’re going for drinks might be the better option?
