A lot of people have been waiting with varying levels of patience for a Jailbreak to their iOS 6 devices. No luck so far, and the Dev Team has been reporting very little progress on that front, to everyone’s dismay. A sliver of hope is now appearing from an unusual source. An unknown hacker going by the name “Dream JB” has generated a lot of buzz with a claim that he has a working untethered Jailbreak for newer iOS devices, including the iPhone 5, and he’s going to release it on December 22. He’s not affiliated with the Dev Team, and for this reason has drawn the scorn and skepticism of many. But also the enthusiasm and interest of many more.

He does have a website setup, with an FAQ section, and he claims he’s going to post an unedited video today that proves the Jailbreak is working. As to why he’s waiting until December 22nd, Dream JB says that he’s basically waiting to finish his semester so as to not be overloaded while still in school. It is for anyone running iOS 6.0.1 on the following devices: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad (gen2 and beyond), iPad Mini, iPod Touch (gen4 and beyond). And it does use a software exploit which means that Apple can easily patch it with an update, so it’s going to be important for anyone interested to remain on 6.0.1 until the Jailbreak is released… if it is in fact released.

Of course, everyone knows that the world ends on December 21st… so there’s speculation this is all a joke. We’ll find out soon enough.

Update: Aaannd… it’s a fake. Something about this being “a social experiment” and “trust the Dev Team.” Yeah, ok, you got us. The hunt for the elusive Jailbreak continues…
