Some of the biggest companies in electronics including LG, Panasonic, NEC, Samsung, Toshiba and Sony have gotten together to settle on a wireless standard that will allow DVD players, TVs and other electronics to transfer uncompressed HD video to each other without the need for cables. Operating on the 60GHz frequency band the new standard will also be scalable to accomodate future HD standards. (2K? 4K? 6K even? A boy can dream.)

While it does sound pretty exciting we’ve all seen things like this go bad in the past. Bluetooth never really caught on as widely as it was planned to and even Firewire was originally designed to be a single cable solution to connecting all of your AV components but never really made it out of the PC world. Thankfully it looks like a good number of the big manufacturers are trying to be on the same page for this but there are a few other players MIA at the moment. Hopefully this doesn’t turn into another Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD scenario. So far so good though.
