The speakers built into most video projectors aren’t exactly movie theater quality but are usually sufficient enough for the occasional PowerPoint sound effect or poorly mixed corporate video. The Kojima Corp. based in Japan is now selling a projector screen designed to improve sound quality by actually functioning as the projector’s speaker.

The Authentic ASS-60AK Speaker Screen (you can bet that model number will be changed once this reaches North America) is made from a woven fabric called Teonex which is able to produce high frequencies that other fabrics would simply absorb. This special fabric coupled with NXT’s SoundVu technology allows the screen to also act as a speaker by vibrating its surface. The vibrations themselves are of course undetectable to the human eye so as not to disturb the images being projected.

While this technology isn’t exactly movie theater quality either, NXT claims it is good enough for delivering the center channel of a surround sound system or dialogue tracks specifically. Oh and even with the SoundVu technology the Speaker Screen can still be easily rolled up when not needed.

The ASS-60AK Speaker Screen is currently available in Japan for ?59,800 which works out to about $520 US dollars.
